Editor\u2019s note<\/em>: \u00a0I have edited the following poem, which originally was three poems. \u00a0Read and grieve over this, a tale repeated the world over.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2014<\/span> M. Krochmalnik \u00a0Grabois<\/a><\/p>\n Infants and toddlers can’t\u00a0speak<\/span> Teenagers can tell you more\u2014<\/span> Even if they feel\u00a0invincible<\/span> They watch landscape transform\u00a0around them<\/span> Where the sound of gears way up there<\/span> The sound\u00a0they hear now is the<\/span> \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n Interrupted sleep\u00a0in children\u00a0is common<\/span> He has just begun to understand\u00a0that<\/span> Now\u00a0he awakens sensing\u00a0an intruder<\/span> Of course it\u2019s true<\/span> Now,\u00a0he\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0powerless<\/span><\/p>\n \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n I watch my sleeping daughter<\/span> When she was three she\u00a0suffered<\/span> Now they\u00a0are back<\/span> It\u2019s the pressure, he says<\/span> Each of us fingers\u00a0our vulnerabilities<\/span> And\u00a0nausea<\/span> I puzzle over\u00a0wind turbines creating\u00a0nausea<\/span> My neighbor the professor stands<\/span> He\u2019s got vertigo and can\u2019t<\/span> I never much liked\u00a0him<\/span> Laughable, ain\u2019t it, professor?<\/span> (Somehow, it\u00a0makes me think<\/span> Editor\u2019s note: \u00a0I have edited the following poem, which originally was three poems. \u00a0Read and grieve over this, a tale repeated the world over. \u201cUnder the Turbines\u201d \u2014 M. Krochmalnik \u00a0Grabois Infants and toddlers can’t\u00a0speak and even pre-teens may not have vocabulary to describe what\u00a0they suffer Teenagers can tell you more\u2014 they are developing a vocabulary\u00a0of suffering beginning to see how life is unfair fraught\u00a0with\u00a0strife Even if they feel\u00a0invincible they watch parents and know invincibility\u00a0is a lie They watch landscape transform\u00a0around them watch\u00a0five-hundred-foot turbines go up Where the sound of gears way up there is unlike\u00a0the sound of childhood swings that creak in the wind at night \u2014 a comforting sound The sound\u00a0they hear now is the whoosh of the\u00a0wealthy robbing\u00a0them even before they have acquired anything \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026. Interrupted sleep\u00a0in children\u00a0is common a\u00a0child may feel bullied even though\u00a0no classmate bullies\u00a0him He has just begun to understand\u00a0that monsters\u00a0beneath\u00a0the bed don’t\u00a0exist Now\u00a0he awakens sensing\u00a0an intruder roaming\u00a0the house \u2014 the\u00a0monster with weapons more powerful\u00a0than guns \u2014 knowing father is\u00a0helpless against the larger\u00a0forces of\u00a0this world Of course it\u2019s true father tried to stop the turbines pointing\u00a0out the Comprehensive Plan forbade them Now,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0powerless \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026. \n gripping the edges of the podium<\/span>
\n staring at notes<\/span><\/p>\n
\npace his\u00a0classroom and<\/span>
\n speak extemporaneously, he tells me,<\/span>
\n like he used to<\/span><\/p>\n
\n(kind of\u00a0self-important)<\/span>
\n he\u00a0moved here from the\u00a0city<\/span>
\n for peace and quiet<\/span><\/p>\n
\n Now I feel more charitable<\/span>
\n we two stood up in public hearings<\/span>
\nas\u00a0our arguments and pleas were<\/span>
\n ignored by corrupt\u00a0politicians<\/span>
\n \u2014 him with PhD, me with<\/span>
\n high school diploma<\/span><\/p>\n
\n I was smart\u00a0not to go to college, though<\/span>
\n my mother told me<\/span>
\n I was smart enough,<\/span>
