\u00b7<\/span> \u00b7<\/span> <\/a><\/p>\n Denmark. \u00a0The home of Vestas<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n And yet, if political cartoons are an accurate reflection of popular sentiment, the Danes’ love of wind energy may well be exaggerated.<\/p>\n Consider the satire of prominent Danish cartoonist, Jens Hage<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n “Turbines murder Denmark.” \u00a0I borrowed my title, above, from the caption of one of Hage’s more troubling cartoons, “Mord Danmark<\/a>” (“Murder Denmark”). \u00a0(Caution<\/em>: \u00a0The imagery is disturbingly graphic, depicting rape, and to many will be offensive. \u00a0You may prefer not to view it.<\/span>) \u00a0Hage captioned it, “N\u00e5r bare det er gr\u00f8nt, g\u00f8r det ikke ondt!<\/span><\/strong>” (Translated to English: “As long as it’s green, it doesn’t hurt!<\/span><\/strong>\u201d)<\/p>\n (Danish political cartoonists have a talent for getting our attention.)<\/p>\n On the other hand—and this is why I address it—“Murder Denmark” tells us that a front-rank Danish cartoonist felt compelled to express an apparently widespread\u00a0outrage<\/a>\u00a0and disgust over the violence that\u00a0wind developers have inflicted on the land of the Little Mermaid.<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n As Hage reminds us, “The drawing is indeed the shortest path between two brains.”\u00a0<\/span> <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n Meanwhile, as Danes by the hundreds protest<\/a> against a Vestas “large turbine test” project in a wilderness area,\u00a0they are turning to Jens Hage’s cartoons<\/a> for their voice.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n … a voice (a\u00a0cri de coeur<\/em>\u00a0) that contrasts starkly—and tragically—to the bombast of Vestas.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n “The drawing is the shortest path between two brains” (Jens Hage) \u00b7 \u2014Calvin Luther Martin, PhD \u00b7 We’re often told by wind developers and the US government how much the Danes love their wind turbines.
