"Wind farms can cause significant health problems," says new Australian report (Australia)

·
“Wind farms can cause significant health problems for nearby residents, a draft report by specialist consultants says.  The leaked report, once completed, could potentially open the door to litigation by affected residents.  The finding is believed to be the first of its kind in Australia, although The Weekly Times understands a court case in the UK will also hear allegations of serious health impacts from residents near wind farms.

The bottom 2 videos were made by Industrial Wind Action, drawing from a radio interview 12/19/09 by WERU 89.9 FM (Bangor).  Our thanks to Lisa Linowes of Industrial Wind Action for making these available.

A little background.  November 17, 2009, the Fox Islands Wind Project of 3 GE 1.5 MW turbines began generating power on Vinalhaven.  Islanders were thrilled.  There was a big celebration.  Balloons, hot dogs, speeches, ribbon cutting, Washington dignitaries—the works.

"Governed by the ill wind of deception" (United Kingdom)

·
“This weekend it was revealed that a report commissioned by a government department into the noise made by wind turbines and the effect on those who live near them had been quietly doctored. In 2006, the acoustics firm Hayes Mackenzie was commissioned to measure noise on three wind farms.  Its findings were most inconvenient. . . . The “absolute noise criterion” for night time should be revised downwards to 38 decibels and, where there was evidence of aerodynamic modulation, the limit should be 33 decibels.

"Hard lessons from the Fox Islands Wind Project" (Maine)

·
—Sally Wylie, Op-ed in The Working Waterfront (12/8/09)

“Although our group overwhelmingly supported the project, we now live with the daily presence of turbine noise, 24/7. As one of the Fox Islands Wind Neighbors (FIWN) recently noted, ‘We support the windmills, but not the noise.’ The noise is as constant as the wind, building in intensity according to wind speed and direction. It can be a low rumbling, whooshing, grinding background noise that one can just hear above the sound of the trees, or it can build to an in-your-face noise, like jet engines roaring combined with a grinding and pulsating sound that echoes in your head, keeps you awake at night, and beats on your house like a drum.
